2021-2022 will be a portentous year for civil rights.

Reproductive Freedom and the right of a women to determine her own health care and needs are under attack as never before.  For current information, go to https://reproductiverights.org/ and https://www.aclu.org/issues/reproductive-freedom

Voting rights are also under attack.  The right to vote is essential to protect our civil liberties, meaningful access to the courts, and to restore a federal judiciary that will protect individual rights in the years to come.  To follow ongoing developments, go to https://www.aclu.org/issues/voting-rights

Early decisions in the 2021-22 U.S. Supreme Court term are troubling.

  1. Egbert v. Boule overturned 50 years of practice  that allowed suing federal agents for constitutional violations.
  2. Shinn v. Martinez-Ramirez, decided a federal court could not even consider evidence that someone was wrongly convicted of a crime.
  3. Gallardo v. Marstiller upheld Florida’s Medicaid reimbursement statute’s provision that allows Medicaid to “recover” 37.5 percent of a personal injury settlement even for unbilled, yet to be furnished, future medical expenses that may never be incurred.

ALL these decisions were written by Justice Thomas for the majority.

Battling Legacy Child Sex Abuse Cases - Kiwanis Vocational Home

Since 2015, Fred has been part of a legal team headed by Darrell Cochran of Pfau Cochran Vertetis Amala, waging battles against the State of Washington and Kiwanis over abuse that occurred from 1980 to 1995.  The efforts to make the government and others accountable for those horrific actions have helped change lives for scores of victims.    SEE,  Lewis_Co_Chronicle_2021-08-27  and   kiwanis-news
